And just like that, San Francisco 49ers football is back!
The red and gold kicked off training camp practices on Wednesday without the Faithful in attendance due to a Chelsea F.C. and Wrexham AFC soccer match taking place at Levi's® Stadium. However, that all changes tomorrow when the fans are invited into the SAP Performance Facility for the team's first open workout of the summer.
Training Camp Notebook
- Rookie safety Malik Mustapha snagged the first interception of camp on a deep ball during 7-on-7 drills.
- Running back Isaac Guerendo suffered a hamstring injury during team drills, and per Shanahan, the rookie will be getting an MRI for further evaluation.
- Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who was placed on the Active/PUP list this morning, did not participate in practice but was seen chopping it up with teammate Fred Warner on the field and going through rehab work.
- Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was in attendance but not practicing on the first day of camp.
- Left tackle Trent Williams did not report to training camp. "It's contract related. (President of football operations/general manager) John (Lynch) is speaking with his representatives and has been doing it for a while," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "He'll continue to go. When they work it out, I'll be pumped to see him."
- Tight end George Kittle and cornerback Charvarius Ward were back at practice after undergoing core muscle surgery in the offseason. Both took part in both individual and team drills.
Quarterback Brock Purdy Details His Offseason Training Away from the 49ers
The third-year quarterback had an entirely different offseason experience in 2024, free of rehab work and the uncertainty he dealt with a year ago following major elbow repair surgery. Purdy is in the midst of his first healthy training camp since becoming San Francisco's QB1, and he has returned to Santa Clara in improved physical condition, and according to him, a couple pounds heavier.
"Last year, a lot of it was rehabbing my arm and trying to get my arm healthy while trying to work out and stuff as well," Purdy said. "This year I actually had some time to work on my craft and my body, but it's really just like anybody else in terms of offseason, right before camp starts everyone gets after it and tries to get in the best shape as they can. That's what I did.
"For me moving forward, it's like how can I maintain that strength and all that throughout the season because it's a grind. We're going to be practicing, four, three days in a row. I've got to just stay on it and feel good. I went down to Jacksonville, and my guys got me right. I'm excited."
"Brock works really hard in the offseason. We always joke about his baby (Nick) Bosa legs," Shanahan said. "He builds those up, gets his strength. Brock is always improving each year. It's the work ethic he has, mentally and physically. He continues to get better."
Purdy gave himself a month to get individual coaching in Jacksonville and focused, at least in part, on his quarterback mechanics.
"There's a guy that comes in and does like the 3D motion capture stuff, and we looked at my mechanics and tried to apply it to my on-field training to get more power out of my hips and all the stuff that goes into it," Purdy said. "... We were actually able to chip away at some things, where last year I was (only) there for a couple weeks. It was more about my elbow rehab, and then I had come back here early.
"I got some good time away to work on it. I do feel like I got better just with my arm and mobility and strength. But, like I said earlier, that's something that I have to maintain as we go."
