After a much needed player off-day, the San Francisco 49ers opened up their final block of training camp practices on Tuesday in front of another packed house. Just one more practice with fans in the stands remains, and on Friday, the team will depart for their preseason opener versus the Tennessee Titans.
Training Camp Notebook
- The day began with a roster move that brought a familiar face, RB Matt Breida, back to The Bay. He was signed to a one-year deal, in a corresponding move, the team placed WR Malik Turner on the Injured Reserve list. Breida is wearing jersey No. 28.
- The 49ers newest offensive lineman, Lewis Kidd, is wearing No. 66.
- A number of previously injured players appear to be trending in the right direction. CB Darrell Luter Jr., RB Isaac Guerendo, RB Elijah Mitchell, OL Spencer Burford and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles were doing rehab work on the sidelines.
- Head coach Kyle Shanahan offered a few injury updates on players missing from Tuesday's practice:
- RB Christian McCaffrey suffered a calf strain and is expected to be out of practice for the next couple weeks. The veteran will not be seeing any playing time this preseason.
- Mitchell is dealing with a hamstring strain and is expected to miss "a week or so" of practice.
- WR Ricky Pearsall tweaked his shoulder during practice and was taken out halfway through the workout. Per Shanahan, it's "something that he did in OTAs."
- P Mitch Wishnowsky, who has recently been sitting out of practice, is dealing with knee irritation. The head coach said the team will have to figure something out for the quickly approaching preseason opener.
- WR Jacob Cowing returned to practice after dealing with a hamstring injury for the last couple weeks. OL Ben Bartch and WR Tay Martin were also back.
- FB Kyle Juszczyk, DL Nick Bosa, DL Leonard Floyd and DL Javon Hargrave all enjoyed veteran rest days.
- While Shanahan did not reveal exactly what his exact plan for the starters in this first preseason game, he did note that many of them would not be playing against the Titans.
- WR Danny Gray wore a blue non-contact jersey for practice
- QB Brock Purdy opened up the team's first 11-on-11 period by dropping a dime to Pearsall for a would-be touchdown. The rookie wideout was able to shake off S George Odum and CB Deommodore Lenoir to make the catch in stride.
- QB Brandon Allen hit TE Eric Saubert for a nice gain over the middle during the team's move-the-ball period. Saubert, who is an offseason addition, appears to have picked up the offense quickly and has a reliable target for all three of the 49ers quarterbacks.
- Bell has been making consistent, contested catches. Today, he hauled in a pass from QB Joshua Dobbs over the middle with S Jaylen Mahoney in coverage.
- Early on in team drills, Lenoir secured an interception.
- Cowing rejoined WRs Trent Taylor, Ronnie Bell and Pearsall in punt return drills.
