QBs Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen on Fitting Into the 49ers Offense
Both Dobbs and Allen are contenders for the backup quarterback position behind quarterback Brock Purdy. Allen, who is entering his ninth year in the league, re-signed with the 49ers in the offseason after spending the entirety of 2023 with the red and gold. Dobbs is a newcomer to The Bay, signing on with San Francisco after stints with the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings last season.
"Crazy is probably the simplest terms to define it," Dobbs said when asked about his 2023 season. "It seemed like every time you kind of got settled, it was like, 'Okay, let's go learn a new offense, new teammates, new city and try to get acclimated to go out and play good football.' It was a crazy experience but I enjoyed every bit of it."
As Dobb works to master the intricacies of a fourth NFL offensive system in roughly a year's time, Allen is feeling more settled now that he's got a season playing for head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"Having that whole year last year and be in it, and then come back again this year with the same system has been good," Allen said. "I'm definitely more comfortable, mainly in terms of verbiage. I've been able to call the plays a lot easier, visualize in my head, so I definitely think last year helped."
While there is competition in every position group during camp, Allen, Dobbs and the larger quarterback room are on the same page about what the overall goal of camp is - to put the offense in the best position possible for 2024.
"We push each other everyday on the practice field," Allen said. "Really as a QB group as a whole, we're all out there to make each other better and that includes Brock and Tanner Mordecai. We're all pushing to make the right play, the right throw. There's no animosity towards each other at all. We want to see each other succeed and make everyone around us better."
