Training Camp Day 10: Samuel Sr. Vet Day, 49ers Wrap Up Third Block of Practices

The San Francisco 49ers closed out their third block of training camp practices with a lighter, non-padded practice after grinding it out on Saturday in an extended workout. Players will have Monday off before opening the last leg of training camp on Tuesday morning.

Training Camp Notebook

  • WR Deebo Samuel Sr., who had gone nine-straight training camp practices without a veteran rest day, took the day off from practice but was spotted on the sidelines.
  • RB Christian McCaffrey and LB Curtis Robinson took part in position drills but did not participate in team drills.
  • Although they have not yet returned to practice, OL Spencer Burford and WRs Tay Martin and Jacob Cowing are showing signs of improvement. All three were doing rehab work during practice.
  • Other players not practicing today included RB Elijah Mitchell, WR Malik Turner, RB Isaac Guerendo, P Mitch Wishnowsky, CB Darrell Luter Jr. and DL Sam Okuayinonu.
  • WRs Ronnie Bell, Trent Taylor and Ricky Pearsall continued their punt returning work.
  • The speed of practice was visibly slower than it has been since Monday when they started playing with pads.
  • Bell is on a contested catch streak in this third block of practices. During a move-the-ball period, he high-pointed a ball from QB Brandon Allen with rookie CB Renardo Green draped on him. Later in the drill, Purdy went across his body on a play action rollout to Bell, who was able to haul in the pass. Purdy had DL Leonard Floyd chasing him down on this play with a possible would-be sack.
  • With McCaffrey and Mitchell out, RB Jordan Mason got the lion's share of the reps with the first-team offense.
  • DL Nick Bosa had at least two-would be sacks over the course of the team's 11-on-11 work.
  • Chemistry between Purdy and Pearsall is developing. The rookie wideout caught a couple passes from Purdy during 11-on-11 drills, including one he had to fight for when going up against CB Deommodore Lenoir.
  • Purdy spent extra time after practice working on throwing while on the move. The 49ers QB1 cited the reason being that Monday is a player day off, and he "wanted to get after it."
  • K Jake Moody made his one field goal attempt on the day.
