The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their first week of practice with a closed practice on account of the Chivas Guadalajara vs. San Jose Earthquakes match taking place Saturday evening. Practice No. 4 marked the final padless practice for the red and gold with the team's first padded practice slated for Monday.
Training Camp Notebook
- Ahead of practice No. 4 of camp, the 49ers waived CB Kemon Hall and signed WR Frank Darby.
- Several veteran players including TE George Kittle, DL Nick Bosa, CB Charvarius Ward, RB Christian McCaffrey, OL Jake Brendel, DL Maliek Collins, LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles and OL Spencer Burford returned to action following a veteran rest day.
- Head coach Kyle Shanahan shared that Burford broke his hand and is expected to miss two to three weeks, and the team is currently deciding whether or not the third-year offensive lineman should have surgery on the hand.
- Shanahan also noted that WR Ricky Pearsall, who started training camp on the Active/NFI list, has a "chance" to return to practice Monday. He has been rehabbing on the sidelines during the team's practices this week.
- Fellow rookie wideout Jacob Cowing is dealing with a hamstring injury.
- According to Shanahan, there is a possibility of S Talanoa Hufanga being cleared to return in time for the 49ers joint practices with the New Orleans Saints in Irvine, CA.
- Brock Purdy made some nice connections during team drills, finding Chris Conley and Malik Turner over the middle and then hitting Deebo Samuel Sr. on a slant.
- CB Deommodore Lenoir had an impressive breakup of a pass intended for TE Cameron Latu.
Linebacker De'Vondre Campbell Details Free Agency Decision to Join the 49ers
Campbell arrived in The Bay via free agency, opting to sign with San Francisco in March after spending the last three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. The eight-year pro offers San Francisco 49ers an experienced option to play alongside linebacker Fred Warner as Dre Greenlaw works his way back from a season-ending Achilles injury.
"It's been pretty cool so far," Campbell said. "My teammates are great. The coaches are great. I'm just taking it all in, one day at a time at this point."
He has been training in Santa Clara throughout the offseason, integrating himself into his new team and defensive scheme.
"I played in a similar scheme in Atlanta, so I wouldn't say the scheme is completely new," Campbell said. "It's really just learning the terminology and the way they want to play here. There is always that adjustment period, but I'm getting better and better everyday and picking up small things daily."
While it's a brand new team for Campbell, he is familiar with at least a couple members of the coaching staff. Campbell and Shanahan spent one year together at the Atlanta Falcons, and he's had a relationship with assistant head coach/defense Brandon Staley since his high school days.
"(Staley) actually recruited me to go to junior college," Campbell said. "I've always had a great relationship with him. It's pretty cool that everything comes full circle.
"His football IQ has always been super high. That's one of the first things I noticed about him. I think he's a huge addition for our defense, especially for a lot of younger guys. They can learn a lot from him as well as myself and everyone else."
