Power Rankings: 49ers Remain a Top Ten Contender Headed Into Week 3

A hard fought battle with the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 2 resulted in the San Francisco 49ers first loss of the 2024 season. Despite falling into an early deficit, the red and gold had a chance to complete the comeback in their final offensive possession. On the list of notable performers from Week 2 were linebacker Fred Warner (nine tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, 1.0 sack and two pass breakups, defensive lineman Nick Bosa (five tackles, 2.0 sacks) and running back Jordan Mason (20 carries for 100 yards). While the outcome wasn't what San Francisco had hoped for, the team's top tier talent and ability to overcome a slow start with tactical plays down the stretch showed how the 49ers are a threat in every outing.

Let's take a look at what national outlets had to say about the 49ers roster following their Week 2 performance:

Eric Edholm, Lead Draft Writer

"The 49ers seemed sleepy early on Sunday, having a punt blocked, turning the ball over on downs twice and surrendering a 97-yard touchdown pass before getting back in the game a little."

Nick Wagoner, ESPN NFL Nation, on the Most Important Backup/Role Player

"As the No. 3 receiver, the Niners lean on Jauan Jennings to do the dirty work and deliver when it matters most. He has earned the trust to handle blocking duties from outside receiver to de facto tight end. Since the start of last season, Jennings has a run block win rate of 84.8 percent, well above the league average (79.2 percent) for receivers in that span. If that's not enough, he has also earned the nickname "Third and Jauan" for his ability to move the chains. Fifty-five of his 85 career receptions have gone for first downs, with 34 of those coming on third or fourth down."

Bleacher Report Staff Writers

"After the San Francisco 49ers dispatched the New York Jets with relative ease in Week 1, the belief by many was that the team would experience similar success in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. But after allowing over 400 yards of offense and a two-turnover performance from quarterback Brock Purdy, the Niners left the Twin Cities trying to figure out what went wrong in a six-point loss."

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports Senior Writer

"Losing a road game after a Monday night game isn't too hard to understand, but they had too many defensive lapses against the Vikings. Not having Christian McCaffrey for a month and Deebo Samuel Sr. missing time won't help the offense, either."
