49ers Begin Kicker Search as Jake Moody Battles High Ankle Sprain

The quick turnaround to the San Francisco 49ers "Thursday Night Football" matchup versus the Seattle Seahawks does not leave much time for anything other than turning the page on Sunday's 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. With four days between gamedays, the 49ers won't be practicing full speed at any point this week, and the coaching staff found themselves in the thick of game prep for their next NFC West opponent almost immediately following the end of regulation in Week 5.

"We'd love to sit here and get pissed. We'd love to be able to do something about that, what just happened," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Sunday in his postgame press conference. "But, you can't do anything about these games once they end. I tell the guys the next time we'll be able to do something is Thursday, and it's better to only have to wait until Thursday... It will come fast, but always when you have a Thursday night game, we always say the biggest thing is rest and recovery."

The immediate need of the team heading into Thursday night is a kicker with second-year special teamer Jake Moody suffering a high ankle sprain in the first half against the Cardinals. Moody was kicking off following San Francisco's blocked field goal touchdown and fell while tackling Arizona's kick returner. The 49ers kicker was able to walk halfway off the field before hopping on one foot to the bench. Shortly after, he was carted off the sideline.

In addition to prepping for the team's upcoming game, the scouting department and coaching staff are also working on finding a replacement kicker to step in while Moody recovers.

"I think we've got four guys coming in later today," Shanahan said. "I know that's what the guys are working on now, just finishing this game and getting started on all the Seattle stuff in the short week. So, I know those guys are scrambling in. I think they've got four guys coming, but I didn't get their names."
