The San Francisco 49ers have a quick turnaround ahead of them in Week 2 with a Midwest road trip on the books following their "Monday Night Football" season opener. With one less day to work with and players still acclimating to the grind of the regular season, the team is tweaking their normal practice schedule to ensure everyone is fresh for Sunday.
"The whole team, we won't do a full-speed practice today, so that's unusual for a Wednesday this early in the year," Shanahan said. "But, just two days removed from Monday we'll go half-speed today, and we'll have one full-speed practice tomorrow."
All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who recently wrapped up his first full week back with the team, noted some cramping following his 70 snaps against the New York Jets on an NFL Network postgame interview. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who also rejoined the team a little over a week ago, has similar feelings about where he is physically.
"It felt good," Aiyuk said. "(I felt) a little sore. (I was) solid though."
"I thought he did a good job. He never felt like he wasn't conditioned," Shanahan said. "We rotated him more than usual, which definitely helped. I haven't gotten to talk to him yet today, but I'm sure he was sore from it. But no, the conditioning, everything, was no factor."
Aiyuk played 43 snaps on Monday night and was one of five pass catchers with 25-plus receiving yards. When Aiyuk was asked what he needs to get in mid-season form, his response was simple, "repetition."
"We have a short week this week," Aiyuk added. "So, being deliberate today and tomorrow and all the way up to the game."
Even with players working up to full speed, the 49ers offense seems to be rolling early. The team managed to score on eight-straight drives to close out Monday's opener, and with big plays from special teams and the defense, the team put together a decisive 32-19 win in their first tough test of the year.
