2025 NFL Scouting Combine: John Lynch Talks Brock Purdy Contract Negotiations

Contract negotiations have commenced between the San Francisco 49ers and their QB1 Brock Purdy.

On Wednesday, 49ers president of football operations/general manager John Lynch took the podium at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind. to deliver a number of team updates from this first portion of the offseason.

"We have started negotiations. We're talking," Lynch said. "I won't go into negotiations like always is our stance. I want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we're here and beyond. We'll leave it at that."

Since being selected No. 262-overall, the former seventh rounder has gone on to start 36 regular season games in addition to leading the team to two NFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl LVIII berth. In his first full season as a starter (2023), Purdy set the single season franchise record for passing yards (4,280) and passer rating (113.0). During Week 14 of the 2024 season, he registered his 10th career game with a passer rating of 130.0-or-higher, the most games with a passer rating of 130.0-or-higher by a quarterback in his first three seasons in NFL history.

Purdy has played the last three seasons on a rookie deal. Per the current NFL collective bargaining agreement, "a rookie contract for a drafted rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s third contract year." So, this is the first offseason that San Francisco, Purdy, and the quarterback's representation have been eligible to engage in these contract talks.

Lynch expressed optimism in the process in his final remarks regarding Purdy's extension.

"I think the final thing is there are no guarantees that we get something done, but my experience is that when both sides are motivated, there is ample opportunity to do so."
