Veteran cornerback Charvarius Ward has wrapped up the Bay Area chapter of his career. After spending three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Ward has signed on to play for the Indianapolis Colts.
Ward continued the upward trajectory of his career during his three-year stint with the 49ers. Originally entering the league as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018, Ward earned himself long-term landing spots first with the Kansas City Chiefs (2018-21), then, the 49ers (2022-24) and now, the Colts. During his time with San Francisco, Ward propelled himself into the conversation as one of the league's top lockdown corners.
Ward started in 46 regular season games for the 49ers and registered 213 tackles, 41 passes defensed, and six interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. He also started six playoff contests, adding another 23 tackles and four passes defensed.
The veteran corner enjoyed his most productive year in 2023, recording a league-high 23 passes defensed and career-best five interceptions. Ward earned his first Pro Bowl nod and Second-Team All-Pro honors for his contributions during the team's run to Super Bowl LVIII.
"Hopefully, this isn't my last one. I worked all my life for (my All-Pro selection), all my career for it, all offseason for it," Ward said in an interview with 49ers Report by Chat Sports at Super Bowl LVIII. "It's a great feeling. It showed me that I'm one of the big dogs, one of them ones, one of the great ones. I'm going to keep striving for greatness."
