What the 49ers and Patriots Had to Say Following Week 4

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New England Patriots 30-13 at Levi's® Stadium in Week 4. Here's what both teams had to say following the contest:

Niners Liners

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on LB Fred Warner's pick-six:

"Oh, that was awesome. I thought the defense was awesome all day. Anytime you score, even better. But to start out the way they did, the first couple drives especially. Fred getting the score, the two turnovers they created. I think, I didn't get a look at all the stats, but I think they were really good on third down. Defense, it felt like, dominated all day."

Shanahan on WR Jauan Jennings' confidence:

"I think Jauan was born this confident. He's always like that... He's as confident as it gets, and I think that's one of his best assets. He's a very talented player, but Jauan never feels he can be denied. That's why he's been so important to us over the years."

Shanahan on RB Jordan Mason's performance vs. New England:

"JP runs so hard. When you commit to the run and he gets a number of carries, it's just eventually, he's going to get them, you know what I mean. He just apologized to me before I walked in here because there's a couple he missed, which is the type of guy he is. There were some that he left out there… He also always gets a lot more than I'm expecting. He has been a stud this year. He has been a stud every time we've given him the ball, and he's really taken advantage of his opportunity."

Quarterback Brock Purdy on his touchdown pass to TE George Kittle:

"The play was for him to break out and then go up. It was more of a third-down play, but we thought we'd get the look for it down there. I saw him break out and then I was getting hit, so I was like, 'I just need to give my guy a shot here and give him a chance.' So, I just put it up for him and let him come down with it. But he made a great play, way better than a throw that was. He made the play. That's George."

Purdy on his ability to "ability to scramble and run":

"I'm not dropping back thinking, alright, 'I'm going to act like I'm going to throw and then just run and try to make a play.' It's not like that. I'm a quarterback. I'm trying to go through my reads and hit my guys and move the chains that way, and that's the position that I play, and I take pride in that. And so, when something's not there and teams drop eight and they're rushing three and last week we saw a play where they dropped nine and rushed two. So, for me it's like knowing that, like I'm still going to go through my progression, try to hit my guys in windows when I can, but if not, then I feel like I have just the right amount of athleticism to move and make plays. I don't need to be a freak athlete and all that kind of stuff. I know who I am, but if something presents itself then I'm willing to do what it takes for our team to move the chains and use my legs... I think my 10-yard split, just to give you guys some perspective, it was faster than Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel Sr., I think. You guys can fact check me. I think I just have enough to get out of the pocket and make a play, pick up five, seven yards here and there. So I'm not (Baltimore Ravens quarterback) Lamar Jackson by any means. But anyways, I just do what it takes."

Safety Ji'Ayir Brown on Warner's preparation leading up to his pick-six:

"Warner made that play on Monday and Wednesday. His preparation is second to none. I don't think anyone prepares throughout the week like Warner. You guys just saw it on game day but he's been doing that all week."

Brown on earning the team's second win:

"Every win is a big win. No matter who the opponent is, we come out here to put on a 49er performance and I think we did that today."

Linebacker Fred Warner on his decision to go for the touchdown after his interception:

"As soon as I got up, I found some green grass. I'm excited to go back and watch it to see the effort that my guys were giving to get blocks. You don't get into the end zone unless you've got your teammates having your back in that situation. So, I'm happy we got that one."

Warner on Purdy's leadership:

"He's the best man. I love Brock, love exactly how he plays the game, who he is, the leader that he is for our team. He doesn't say a whole lot, but he doesn't have to at the end of the day. The way that he approaches his craft and is so humble about his approach - never too high, never too low and continuing to get better in all phases of his game, knowing what it takes to win. I love having him as our quarterback."

Patriots Quotes

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo on falling to the 49ers:

"Obviously, it was a disappointing game. I thought we had a good week of practice. I thought the guys had a lot of energy all week. I'm not going to say anything about the travel. I thought the guys were prepared and ready to go. We didn't hit some of the targets that we talked about. Defensively, keeping the quarterback in the pocket continues to be an issue. Offensively, we don't have a team that can lose the turnover battle and expect to win a football game. We have to do a better job with the turnovers. We have to do a better job with the negative plays and overall, we just have to be good."

Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett on New England's offensive performance:

"Tough. we can't give them two turnovers like that. We can't put our defense in a bad position like that. I think that's where it really starts. Then, it comes back down to the fundamentals and execution. We really beat ourselves. We get a drive going and then something happens. We're not good enough to be able to play against ourselves and the defense. So, we got to just go back to practice, go back to the drawing boards and keep getting better from it."

Brissett on Warner's pick-six:

"We had an in-cut coming open behind the backers. Hats off to Fred Warner, made a great play, but I think I put a bad ball out there and just a better throw would have picked up the first."
