The San Francisco 49ers fell to the Miami Dolphins 29-17 at Hard Rock Stadium in Week 16. Here's what both teams had to say following the contest:
Niners Liners
San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan on what he told the team following the contest:
"No matter what's going on, when you have penalties like that, you don't deserve to win. The offense's biggest thing was a lack of concentration... The defense – three drives, when you have a personal foul on each of those drives – I think two of them ended up in points. But, that was stuff that we can control. I didn't get to see them all but you can't have three personal fouls on three drives in the second half and expect to win."
Shanahan on how he will evaluate player performances from the matchup vs. Miami:
"You look at each play. That's why you watch film, don't just have a sentence to define the whole game. You, get on that plane and watch a lot of the film. Regardless of the situations, those penalties and I don't want to get into the situations with injuries, we had every opportunity to win that game. But you don't give yourself an opportunity when you make some of those mistakes."
Quarterback Brock Purdy on his thoughts leaving the field:
"We were just not good enough. I feel like we hurt ourselves early in the game with some penalties and things and just plays were left out there. Just overall, you start thinking about the plays that could have changed the game, get some points up on the board, get momentum. So when we walk off the field, it's like dang it. We had plenty of opportunities and we didn't finish, so yeah, it hurt."
Linebacker Fred Warner on what went wrong vs. Dolphins:
"Penalties killed us, plus not taking the ball away. One takeaway in the last five games, it's just not going to get it done. I challenged the defense at half saying we needed to take the ball away to win the game and we didn't do that. I put that on myself, just have to continue to keep challenging the guys."
Dolphins Quotes
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel on competing against his former team:
"I was really happy for our team to go – it wasn't like 'the 49ers are going through injuries.' That is a good team that does not quit. So to earn something in that way, I thought our guys deserved it and played the way you have to play and committed the way you have to commit to do that. But beyond that, there's a lot of relationships that – I love that organization and the players and coaches that I have experience with."
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on his thoughts following the game:
"I think that was something that we needed to see as a team together. You could see in all three phases that we were able to play the complementary football that we said we wanted to play. The defense giving the offense opportunities to go put points on the board."
