The San Francisco 49ers will be without one of their top wide receivers for the remainder of the 2024 season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed his initial injury update on Brandon Aiyuk during his Monday press conference call, stating the wideout suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the team's Week 7 matchup versus the Kansas City Chiefs.
"I talked with him last night, called him at his house," Shanahan said. "I haven't seen him today, but he was, he was hurting and just bummed out, you know, as exactly how you'd expect. But, BA is a strong dude and a spiritual guy, and he believes everything happens for a reason. So, he'll be all right, but he was definitely a little down last night. I was just telling him how bad I felt for him and let him know we're all here for him through this."
Aiyuk was injured in the final minute of the second quarter of Sunday's game on a 15-yard reception as he hauled in the pass and came down with a couple of Chiefs defenders. He was able to walk off the field after the play but was carted off the field shortly after and did not return to action.
The fifth-year pro was the 49ers receiving yards leader the last two seasons, eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark and scoring seven-or-more receiving touchdowns in each of those campaigns. Through the first seven games of the 2024 season, Aiyuk has recorded 25 catches for 374 yards including a season-long 53-yard completion against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4.
Aiyuk was the 49ers first-round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and signed a four-year extension in August of this year that will keep him in The Bay through the 2028 season.
