On Monday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan added one name to the injury list following the team's 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The 49ers receiving yards leader in Week 2, wideout Deebo Samuel Sr., suffered a calf strain that, per Shanahan, is expected to sideline him for "a couple weeks."
Samuel Sr. caught nearly every pass thrown his way on Sunday, hauling in eight passes for 110 yards. The sixth-year pro was one of five pass catchers with 25-plus receiving yards in San Francisco's first road game of the year.
"I thought he had some real good catches," Shanahan said. "That team plays more zone than anybody that we've gone against in probably the last eight years... So, that's kind of what you're expecting with it. Brock Purdy had a number of good throws layering it over some backers, and Deebo had to kind of climb the ladder a couple times and made a couple impressive catches.
"I thought he played one of his better games versus the Jets. I don't know if I'd say one of his better ones compared to others, but I thought he played real well."
The head coach shared that Samuel Sr.'s injury appears to have occurred towards the end of regulation as the 49ers were attempting to come back from their late six-point deficit.
"He (Samuel Sr.) told me he thinks he did it when he caught the third-to-last play," Shanahan said. "They (Vikings defense) had a blitz down in the red zone. He caught the hot route breaking in. He says he thinks he did it on that play. I think there were only like two or three plays after that play though."
Samuel Sr.'s projected two-week recovery timeline would mean the 49ers star wide receiver would miss the team's Week 3 divisional matchup with the Los Angeles Rams and Week 4 home game against the New England Patriots.
