The NFL's reigning Offensive Player of the Year is one of the newest members of the Madden 99 Club.
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey earned a 99 overall rating Madden NFL 2025, the latest edition of Electronic Arts' popular video game. The All-Pro player was unveiled as the Madden 25 cover athlete in early June. He is the first player from the 49ers organization to be featured on the cover of the popular Electronic Arts video game since Garrison Hearst was on the international cover in 1999.
McCaffrey is the fifth member of the San Francisco 49ers to join the ranks of the 99 Club. He is now in the company of Hall of Famers Terrell Owens (Madden 2004) and Patrick Willis (Madden 11) as well as Ken Norton Jr. (Madden '99) and his teammate Trent Williams (Madden 23).
By current standards, a 99 overall rating is the highest possible grade a player can receive in Madden. In the 1999 and 2000 versions of the video game, 100 overall ratings were given to elite players but were never awarded again after the turn of the century. Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice is the lone 49ers player to ever receive the now defunct 100 overall rating.
McCaffrey's 99 Club recognition follows a stellar 2023 season in which he earned his third Pro Bowl selection and his second AP First-Team All-Pro honor. McCaffrey led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459) and yards from scrimmage (2,023) while finishing tied for the most total touchdowns (21), helping him win AP Offensive Player of the Year Award. He was also the recipient of the team's Bill Walsh Award, which is voted on by the coaching staff and given to the 49ers player who best represents the standard of professional excellence established by Walsh. During the 2024 offseason, McCaffrey signed a two-year extension to play with the 49ers through the 2027 season.
Madden NFL 2025 which features McCaffrey with his 99 overall rating and as the cover athlete is set to be released on August 16.
