What the 49ers and Vikings Had to Say Following Week 2

The San Francisco 49ers fell to the Minnesota Vikings 23-17 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 2. Here's what both teams had to say following the contest:

Niners Liners

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on the team's performance vs. the Vikings:

"Yeah, give them a lot of credit. They played real well, but it was too sloppy on our part. The two turnovers on offense, struggling on third down on both offense and defense, the special teams with the blocked punt. Might as well -- the same as a turnover to us. It was disappointing. We can play a lot better than that, but tip my hats off to them. They're part of the reason."

Shanahan on LB Fred Warner's two-turnover game:

"The two turnovers were huge. That's what gave us a chance. I mean, both of them were just like what he did versus the Jets. He made a good read in zone read on (Vikings quarterback) Sam Darnold, getting the pick. But not giving up on the screen and knocking the ball out, same as last week."

Shanahan on facing former 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold:

"It didn't surprise me. We knew we were up for a challenge. Sam is a hell of a quarterback. Got a lot of arm talent. We knew scrambling-wise it would be a different challenge today. He's got us in a couple of scrambles. He's done that his whole career and did it in college. We knew we had a challenge with him."

Quarterback Brock Purdy on battling against Minnesota's defense:

"Yeah, it's tough. When first or second down aren't positive plays and you're trying to move the ball and you have to rely on third down with their scheme and, obviously, their disguises and stuff, it can be tough. They just did a good job with making it look like one thing and it was another - different types of blitzes or just dropping out. They did a lot, and that's just on us. It's on me to move the ball, be efficient on first and second down and get us in third and manageable and convert on third down. It's the game of football. It's four quarters like that. We had to learn the hard way."

Purdy on bouncing back from the Week 2 loss:

"I mean, it's just coming out and it's as simple as executing. We've got the players. We've got the scheme. We've got what it takes. It's dropping back and executing, knowing where my answers are at and getting the balls in the guys' hands and drop stepping and getting first down. It's all that. It's football, man. Just because you've got really good players and a good scheme doesn't mean the other team is going to give it to you. You have to go out and earn it. We've had to learn that the first two games this season. Hopefully we can be better next week."

Vikings Quotes

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell on defeating the Niners in Week 2:

"Really proud of our football team. When you play the defending NFC Conference Champions, you know you are signing up for a 12-round heavyweight fight. We talked a lot about play style, we talked about how we want to play as a football team, regardless of who we are playing. I really want those things to show up, because we've made such an emphasis on it. We've built our team around it this year."

O'Connell on preparing to face San Francisco:

"I give Kyle (Shanahan), his coaching staff and all those players so much credit for what they have been able to sustain for so long, and they do it by playing football the right way. They impose their will on opponents, and this team is -- that's a fantastic football team. If you want to go anywhere in this league, especially in our conference, we know, it's proven, last year and a few before that, that it's going to be a team on your schedule whether they were on it initially or not. You're going to have to eventually play 'em. We just got to get the first crack at 'em in week two. But I can't say enough about what Kyle does, that organization, John Lynch. They do everything the right way and you know you're signing up for everything you possibly can give on a Sunday afternoon."

Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold on a 'team win' vs. the 49ers:

"Great team win. I thought defense played their butts off today, special teams as well getting that blocked punt was huge. And then obviously a great team in San Francisco, to be able to come out as a team and fight as a team the way we did. That last drive, the offensive line doing their thing, running the ball you know late in the third quarter, early in the fourth, just guys stepping up. I thought that was huge... Great team win and really proud of the guys."
