For the first time since the conclusion of the 2021 season, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have an offensive coordinator on his staff. Kubiak began his NFL coaching career on the defensive side of the ball, serving as a the 49ers defensive quality control coach for the 2021 season. That year, Kubiak assisted a defensive unit that that ranked third in the NFL in total defense, holding opponents to 310.0 yards per game.

He spent the next two seasons (2022-23) as an assistant quarterbacks coach under Brian Griese, contributing to Brock Purdy's development as a rookie quarterback and beyond. In 2023, Purdy set the single season franchise records for passing yards (4,280) and passer rating (113.0) and became the first 49ers quarterback to throw 30-or-more touchdowns since the 2001 season. Last season, Kubiak was the team's offensive passing game specialist and helped direct the fourth-ranked passing offense in the NFL (249.1 yards per game).

Shortly after Kubiak was promoted to the offensive passing game coordinator, he offered insight into how a coach develops within Shanahan's staff.

"It's all about being a product of the success of this organization. It starts with Kyle and John (Lynch)," Kubiak said. "Kyle and the offense he runs, he's a great teacher. He teaches coaches. He wants coaches to learn and grow into the roles they go into. So, it starts with those guys, their leadership, and the positions they put us in to coach, to learn the scheme, teach (the scheme) to the players - just being around those guys and absorbing... It's a great place to be, a great place to learn."

Family Business

Kubiak comes from an NFL family. His father, Gary Kubiak, was an eighth-round pick (197th-overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft and enjoyed a nine-season career as a backup quarterback for Hall of Famer John Elway (Denver Broncos). He began his NFL coaching career in 1994 with the 49ers and coached his last season in the NFL in 2020 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Kubiak's brother, Klint, is also a coach in the league. He began his career in 2013 with the Vikings, and the two brothers were on San Francisco's coaching staff during the 2023 season. That year, Klint served as the 49ers passing game coordinator, a role Klay went on to fill the following season when his brother took the offensive coordinator position with the New Orleans Saints.
