The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have traded WR Deebo Samuel Sr. to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round draft choice. In addition, the team has released DL Maliek Collins and DL Javon Hargrave.
Samuel Sr. (6-0, 215) appeared in 81 games (73 starts) in six seasons with the team (2019-24), where he registered 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns through the air to go along with 202 carries for 1,143 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. He also started in 12 postseason contests with the team and registered 46 receptions for 638 yards and two touchdowns through the air to go along with 52 carries for 288 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Through his first five NFL seasons (2019-23), Samuel Sr. accumulated 4,122 receiving yards and 1,007 rushing yards, making him one of two players in NFL history to record 4,000-or-more receiving yards and 1,000-or-more rushing yards in their first five seasons (WR Charley Taylor). He is also the only WR in NFL history to register 20-or-more receiving touchdowns and 20-or-more rushing touchdowns in a career. In the 2021 season, Samuel Sr. earned Associated Press First-Team All Pro honors and the first Pro Bowl selection of his career after registering career highs in receiving yards (1,405), rushing yards (365) and rushing touchdowns (eight).
Collins (6-2, 310) started all 17 games he appeared in during the 2024 season and registered 33 tackles, five tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries with the 49ers. Hargrave (6-2, 305) started all 19 games he appeared in over two seasons (2023-24) with the 49ers and registered 51 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks and two passes defensed. He also appeared in three postseason contests with the team and tallied 10 tackles, one tackle for loss, 1.0 sack and one fumble recovery. In 2023, Hargrave earned his second career Pro Bowl selection.
