Many athletes come from a family of other athletes. For Bethune, the case was different. He comes from a family of academics. Bethune's parents are both educators, but the person
who set the precedent for this line of work that runs in his family was his great-aunt, Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded Bethune-Cookman University. Originally an all-girls school, the historically black college was founded in 1904 in Florida. The rich history of education in his family was passed on to Bethune as well. "I came from a family where education was a huge thing," Bethune said. "[The main goal is] to get my degree and make sure my grades are straight. And that's always the main focus. Growing up, school was always the priority."
