Put your travel plans on hold.

The 2014 regular season schedule will not be released this week. That's the word from Brian McCarthy, vice president of communications for the National Football League.

"Contrary to some tweets, the #NFL '14 schedule will not be released this week," McCarthy tweeted on Monday. "We will announce when we will announce it."

In a follow-up tweet, McCarthy also said the schedules for all 32 clubs are not completed.

The schedule release is one of the most anticipated days of the league's offseason calendar, and the buildup will only intensify with McCarthy's announcement. With the NFL Draft taking place later than usual (May 8-10), the league has more time to finalize the regular season schedule.

Fans of the San Francisco 49ers will have to wait a little bit longer to find out the answers to key regular season storylines: When will their team open up regular season play at Levi's® Stadium? When will the 49ers face former starting quarterback Alex Smith of the Kanas City Chiefs? When will the 49ers face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks?

For now, fans can enjoy knowing their team's preseason calendars. The 49ers will open on the road against the Baltimore Ravens. San Francisco will play its next two games at home against the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers before wrapping up preseason play on the road against the Houston Texans.

Thanks to the NFL's rotating schedule and 2013 regular season standings, we do know which teams the 49ers will play when the games start to count in 2014. San Francisco also has the fourth-hardest schedule in '14.
