Training Camp Day 2: 49ers Offense Fires Up in Front of the Faithful

  • Tackle Trent Williams was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list before the start of practice.
  • The 49ers signed wide receiver Malik Turner to a one-year deal.
  • During 11-on-11 drills, CB Darrell Luter Jr. intercepted a deep ball intended for wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
  • WR Ricky Pearsall, who was placed on the Active/NFI list to start training camp, was doing rehab work (sprints) on the sidelines of practice.
  • As detailed by head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday, Christian McCaffrey was a full participant at practice, joining in on both individual and team drills in Thursday's workout.
  • The 49ers were testing out multiple offensive line groupings on the first team that included Jake Brendel and Jon Feliciano taking reps at center. Third-year Spencer Burford took reps at right guard while Aaron Banks and Feliciano also split reps at left guard. Jaylon Moore is working in at left tackle with Williams not at practice.
  • Safety Malik Mustapha nearly snagged another pick breaking up a pass to Jennings near the left sideline.

49ers Sign WR Malik Turner, Place T Trent Williams on Reserve/Did Not Report List

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed WR Malik Turner to a one-year deal. In order to make room on the roster, the team has placed T Trent Williams on the Reserve/Did Not Report List.

Turner (6-2, 202) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent on July 29, 2018. Throughout his five-year career with the Seahawks (2018-19), Dallas Cowboys (2020-21) and San Francisco 49ers (2022) he has appeared in 44 games (three starts) and registered 29 receptions for 414 yards and four touchdowns. Turner appeared in three games with the 49ers in 2022. He then spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans practice squads and spent the 2023 training camp with the Indianapolis Colts.

A 28-year-old native of Springfield, IL, Turner attended the University of Illinois where he appeared in 46 games (35 starts) and registered 143 receptions for 1,804 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Training Camp Day 1: 49ers Defense Snags Their First Pick

  • Rookie safety Malik Mustapha snagged the first interception of camp on a deep ball during 7-on-7 drills.
  • Running back Isaac Guerendo suffered a hamstring injury during team drills, and per Shanahan, the rookie will be getting an MRI for further evaluation.
  • Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who was placed on the Active/PUP list this morning, did not participate in practice but was seen chopping it up with teammate Fred Warner on the field and going through rehab work.
  • Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was in attendance but not practicing on the first day of camp.

Brandon Aiyuk Named No. 66 on the NFL's 'Top 100 Players of 2024'

The NFL Network kicked off the week by beginning its countdown of "The Top 100 Players of 2024," and following the announcement of Dre Greenlaw's spot at No. 76, the second San Francisco 49ers player to be voted onto the list by his peers was revealed.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk earned spot No. 66 in the top 100 and was announced alongside athletes ranking from 61-70. This marks the first time Aiyuk has made NFL Network's esteemed list.

49ers 2024 Roster Breakdown: Specialists

Heading into the 2024 season, the San Francisco 49ers specialist unit stands out for its consistency and experience.

Second-year kicker Jake Moody, drafted in 2023, showcased solid accuracy with an 84 percent field goal success rate and near-perfect extra points. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky, now in his sixth season and recognized as a Pro Bowl alternate multiple times, maintains a steady 45.7-yard average per punt. Taybor Pepper, entering his seventh season overall and fifth with the 49ers, provides reliable snapping for the team. Together, Moody, Wishnowsky and Pepper form a reliable trio crucial to the 49ers special teams effectiveness.
