Thursday wasn't very long ago when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo put up one of his best performances in red and gold. In the 28-25 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Garoppolo finished the night 28-of-37 passing for 317 yards with a career-high four touchdown passes, zero interceptions and a passer rating of 136.9, another career high.
Not to be lost in the mix of Sunday and Monday's Week 9 contests, Garoppolo's primetime showing earned him a FedEx Air Player of the Week nomination.
Thursday night's win marked Garoppolo's third-career game with 300-plus passing yards and his first since Week 15, 2017 against the Tennessee Titans (381 yards). Garoppolo's four touchdown passes are the most by a member of the 49ers since Colin Kaepernick had four passing touchdowns at New England Patriots (Dec. 2012). The quarterback was stellar on third down. Three of Garoppolo's four touchdowns came on third down with one coming on fourth. Garoppolo also managed to spread the ball around on offense, connecting with nine different receivers on the day.
According to Next Gen Stats, Garoppolo managed to take advantage of the Cardinals defense when playing the run, completing 14-of-20 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns for a 125.4 passer rating.
San Francisco's quarterback earned his first nomination since his Week 2 performance over the Cincinnati Bengals (17-of-25 passing, 297 yards, three TDs).
Garoppolo is up against Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for the weekly honor. Voting is open until Thursday at 12:00 p.m. PT at NFL.com/FedEx. Fans can also vote on Twitter using the NFL published polls.
