The most talked about name change in the NFL will be put on hold until further notice.
Donte Whitner won't change his name to Donte "Hitner" just yet.
On Tuesday, the 49ers safety had to withdraw his name change request in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Whitner explained the reason on his verified Twitter account.
"Judge won't allow it without me being present..." Whitner wrote.
The hard-hitting defensive back will now pursue the change after the 2013 season.
It seems like the strong safety has more on his mind than his last name. Whitner also tweeted that he wanted to speak to the media on Wednesday.
That has to be a first from a 49ers player on social media.
We'll follow up with Whitner's comments later on 49ers.com.
And while he won't be able to have "Hitner" on his jersey this season, San Francisco's strong safety can at least sport his nickname on the back of his cleats.
