The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that they have promoted defensive back Tyvis Powell to the active roster from the team's practice squad. In order to make room on the roster, the team has released linebacker Terence Garvin.
Powell (6-3, 211) saw action in three games with the 49ers in 2017 after he was promoted to the active roster from the team's practice squad on December 16, 2017. He finished the season with three tackles on defense and two tackles on special teams. After spending 2018 training camp with the team, he was released on September 1, 2018 and signed to the team's practice squad the following day.
A 24-year-old native of Bedford, OH, Powell attended Ohio State University where he appeared in 42 games (33 starts) and registered 195 tackles, eight interceptions and 16 passes defensed.
Powell will wear number 30.
Garvin (6-3, 242) originally signed with the team on September 12, 2018 and registered one tackle on special teams last week against the Detroit Lions.
