Fred Gammage III is in his sixth season with the 49ers and first as director, pro scouting. He spent the previous five seasons (2019-23) as a pro scout with the club. He joined San Francisco from Arizona State University where he served as an assistant director of player personnel for the 2018 season.
In his role, Gammage manages the daily operations of the pro scouting department and their evaluations of players among the various professional leagues to help prepare the club for acquisitions through free agency, trades and the daily player transactional movement. Gammage also assists the coaching staff in preparation for the 49ers upcoming opponents through his advance scouting.
In 2017, Gammage was an intern with the football management staff at Arizona State. In his role, he assisted in planning and coordinating recruiting strategies and operations along with the evaluation of potential student-athletes.
A native of Tempe, AZ, Gammage graduated from Arizona State in May of 2016 with a degree in exercise and wellness. A wide receiver for the Sun Devils, he registered 52 receptions for 537 yards and three touchdowns from 2013-16.
