Staley joins the 49ers after three seasons (2021-23) as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. While at the helm of the Chargers, Staley led the team to a 24-24 record, which included their first playoff appearance in the previous four seasons in 2022.
Prior to his time with the Chargers, Staley spent one season (2020) as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, where he led a defensive unit that ranked first in scoring defense (18.5), total defense (281.9) and passing yards per game (190.7). Staley joined the Rams after spending three seasons on Vic Fangio's defensive staff, serving as the outside linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos (2019) and Chicago Bears (2017-18).
Before becoming a coach in the NFL, Staley spent three seasons (2013, 2015-16) at Division III John Carroll as defensive coordinator/secondary coach and the 2014 season as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at James Madison. Prior to his time with John Carroll and James Madison, Staley served as a graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee (2012) after two seasons (2010-11) as the defensive coordinator at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois (2006-08) before serving as the defensive line/special teams coach at Division III University of St. Thomas in 2009.
A native of Perry, OH, Staley played collegiately as a quarterback at the University of Dayton for four seasons (2001-04) and finished his career at Division II Mercyhurst College (2005). Him and his wife, Amy, have three sons, Colin, Will and Grant.
