August Mangin is in his third season with the 49ers and second as the team's special teams quality control/game management specialist. He spent his first season with the team as special teams quality control coach in 2021. He joined the 49ers after spending the previous two seasons (2019-20) as a lead defensive analyst at Louisiana State University.
In 2022, San Francisco's special teams saw K Robbie Gould connect on 27 of his 32 field goal attempts and 50 of his 51 extra point attempts, marking the 11th season of his career with at least an 80-percent field goal percentage and a 95-percent extra point percentage. Gould hit on a 23-yard field goal in overtime in Week 17 (at Las Vegas) to help the Niners win their first game at Allegiant Stadium. P Mitch Wishnowsky averaged 39.7 net yards per punt and finished the year with the highest percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line (52.5) in the NFL. Wishnowsky was also named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month (September) for the second time in his career. WR Ray-Ray McCloud III finished the season ranked second in the NFL in punt return yards with 356.
The 2021 San Francisco special teams were highlighted by K Robbie Gould, who connected on 20 of 23 field goal attempts (87.0%) and 39 of his 40 extra point attempts (97.5%). Gould was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after making his two field goal attempts (42 & 24 yards), including the eventual game-winner in overtime against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18. He also replaced P Mitch Wishnowsky, who left due to injury, and punted for the first time since 2007, punting twice for an average of 45.0 yards and one punt downed inside the 20.
San Francisco also had a memorable performance on special teams in the 49ers NFC Divisional Round victory over the Green Bay Packers. DB Jimmie Ward blocked a Packers K Mason Crosby 39-yard field goal attempt and DL Jordan Willis blocked a Packers P Corey Bojorquez punt. S Talanoa Hufanga recovered the punt blocked by Willis, and returned it six yards for a touchdown. It marked the first time a member of the 49ers had returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the postseason in franchise history. Gould connected on field goals of 29 and 45 yards, with his 45-yard field goal coming as time expired for a walk-off win.
Last season, LSU's defense was led by freshman CB Eli Ricks who registered a team-high four interceptions to go along with 20 tackles. Senior OLB Andre Anthony also added 5.5 sacks and 24 tackles. In his first season with LSU in 2019, Mangin and the Tigers capped off a memorable season with a 42-25 victory over the University of Clemson to win the CFP National Championship. LSU finished 15-0, as the team allowed an average of 21.9 points per game and just 222.7 passing yards per game.
Mangin went to LSU following one season (2018) as a special teams analyst at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide finished the season with a 14-1 record, which included a trip to the College Football Playoff. Alabama averaged 45.6 points per game and allowed just 18.1 points per game on the year.
From 2014-17, Mangin served as the special teams coordinator and a different position coach each season at Northwestern State University, his second stint with the school, having coached as a graduate assistant special teams/tight ends coach in 2011. Throughout his time with the Demons, Mangin coached special teams players WR Ed Eagan and K Chris Moore. In 2014, Eagan set single-season school records in kickoff returns (45) and kickoff return yardage (1,045) and earned Associated Press Second-Team All-America honors as an all-purpose player and Special Teams Player of the Year honors from the College Sports Network. Eagan also finished his career as Northwestern State's all-time leader in kickoff return yardage (2,125). As a junior in 2014, Moore set school single-season records for field goal attempts (26), made extra points (42) and extra point attempts (43). As a senior in 2015, Moore connected on 16 of 19 field goal attempts and 35 of 37 extra points. He finished his career as Northwestern State's all-time leading scorer (248 points) and set the school record for career field goals (45). Northwestern State's punt coverage unit led the NCAA in punt return defense during Mangin's first season back with the school in 2014, allowing nine punt return yards all season. From 2014-15, the Demons allowed a total of 85 punt return yards.
Prior to joining Northwestern State for the second time, Mangin spent the 2012-13 seasons as a graduate assistant special teams/tight ends coach at LSU under longtime NFL special teams coach Thomas McGaughey. The Tigers saw future NFL Draft choices WR Odell Beckham, Jr. and S Tyrann Mathieu earn All-America honors as returners, with K Drew Alleman being named Second-Team All-SEC in 2012.
A native of Lewisville, TX, Mangin spent five years (2005-09) at LSU as a walk-on fullback. He graduated from LSU with a degree in education (K-12) with a concentration in kinesiology. He later earned his master's degree in sport administration from Northwestern State in 2012.
