At 5-2, the San Francisco 49ers have several Pro Bowl-worthy performers. In fact, you could go up and down the roster and find Pro Bowl candidates.
Ultimately, the goal is to not play in the league's annual showcase game. The 49ers would much rather make a return appearance in the Super Bowl. But for now, voting for the fans is now open for business.
The NFL has changed the format considerably for the 2014 Pro Bowl. The NFL's top two vote-getters will become team captains for teams led by former 49ers greats and Pro Football Hall of Famers, Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders. Both legends will hold a fantasy football-like draft where they'll pick their team based on the All-Stars selected to the Pro Bowl.
The league is calling this year's game, "Unconferenced."
Here are a handful of 49ers worth of Pro Bowl consideration.
Vernon Davis
The 49ers tight end has 330 receiving yards in the month of October, the third most in the NFL among all players. Davis leads the 49ers with six receiving touchdowns and has 466 receiving yards, fourth most among all tight ends in the NFL. Davis has been to one Pro Bowl (2009) and deserves condsideration to make it again in 2014.
Frank Gore
San Francisco's featured running back ranks fourth in the league with 547 rushing yards and is fifth with five rushing touchdowns and seventh with 26, first-down runs. Gore leads the NFL with seven runs of 20-or-more yards and is coming off a two-touchdown performance against the Tennessee Titans. Gore is a five-time Pro Bowler (2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012).
Anquan Boldin
The 11-year veteran receiver leads the 49ers with 495 receiving yards and has caught 34 passes, 23 of which have went for first downs. Earlier this month, Boldin became the fourth fastest player to reach 800 career receptions, doing so in 146 games. Boldin has been named to three Pro Bowl teams (2003, 2006 and 2008).
NaVorro Bowman
The two-time All-Pro linebacker has been a consistent performer for San Francisco's defense. With fellow All-Pro Joe Staley nursing a groin injury for two weeks, Bowman was a difference-maker to start San Francisco's recent four-game winning streak. Bowman, a fourth-year pro, leads the 49ers with 59 tackles. Bowman has selected to one Pro Bowl (2012).
Eric Reid
The No. 18 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft is tops among all NFC rookies with three interceptions. Reid has 31 tackles, five pass breakups and one fumble recovery. The stage hasn't been too big for the first-year free safety.
