The San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week award for Week 5 goes to Coach Mark Turner from El Camino High School.
Last Friday, the El Camino Colts defeated the Hillsdale Knights 23-20.
With the memory of last year's 56-28 loss to the Knights still on their minds, the Colts knew that they had something to prove.
"We had a big week at practice," Turner said. "We knew that we would have to do the thing that we do best, pound the ball."
The ground game was led by El Camino's "work horse" halfback Nathan Huey and fullback D.J. Peluso. With the two splitting the load, the Colts were able to control the pace of the game and keep the Knights' offense off the field.
As with most effective running games, there was a strong night by the offensive line to thank. Left guard Trevor Kelly used all of his 6-foot-2, 295-pound frame to help open the running lanes for Peluso and Huey. Right guard Kevin Folan and tackle Ryan Anderson were also there clearing the way. All three of these young men not only made an impact on the offensive side of the ball, but on defense as well. With Kelly, Folan and Anderson starting on the defensive line too, they proved that the old adage that "football games are won in the trenches."
"They held everything down for us on the line of scrimmage" praised Coach Turner.
In the end, the Colts were able to avenge last year's blowout loss and take home a very important win in their first league game of the season.
For El Camino's outstanding team effort, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Coach Mark Turner as the Charlie Wedemeyer High School Coach of the Week.
In addition to being named Coach of the Week, Coach Turner and the El Camino High School football program will receive $1,000 from the 49ers Foundation.
