Kyle Shanahan dropped a bit of breaking news during his press conference on Monday. The San Francisco 49ers are going to sign veteran running back Alfred Morris, pending a physical. The addition of Morris comes in the wake of injuries to Matt Breida (shoulder) and Jerick McKinnon (calf).
Morris played in Shanahan's offense with the Washington Redskins from 2012-13. The running back posted a career high 1,613 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in 2012. He added 1,275 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013.
"Alf did a great job for us for the two years I was with him," Shanahan said. "It's not flashy but he runs extremely hard. He's very reliable. He's always been able to - you block it for zero, (he) usually can get at least one. He's a hard-nose runner, you can keep handing the ball off to who's very reliable."
Morris has spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as the backup to Ezekiel Elliott. He's racked up 5,503 rushing yards, 32 touchdowns and two Pro Bowl appearances during his six-year NFL career.
Shanahan said that his expectation is to have Morris for both joint practices against the Houston Texans. The 49ers head coach added that he believes Morris will have a shot at making the roster.
