Eric Reid lined up again with the first-team defense on Tuesday.
Reid hasn't been named Friday night's starting free safety, but he took the majority of the first-team reps for a second consecutive day.
The first-round pick was solid for most of the day, but found himself victimized on a 30-yard leaping catch from undrafted tight end MarQueis Gray. The eye-catching reception came on a deep ball from Colt McCoy. In fact, it was the second big-time reception of the day from the converted college quarterback out of the University of Minnesota. Gray also out-jumped safety Darcel McBath to haul in a 25-yard pass from Scott Tolzien.
Gray's receptions were impressive, but they did not stand as the best play of the day at an evening session that saw contact go by the wayside with the 49ers practicing in shorts.
The best play honor went to fourth-year wideout Kyle Williams who caught a 45-yard deep ball down the right sideline from rookie quarterback B.J. Daniels. Another rookie, seventh-round pick Marcus Cooper, had tight coverage. Williams, however, worked his way back to the slightly underthrown ball and made a leaping grab to receive the downfield pass. Williams caugt three other passes in the evening session.
A.J. Jenkins also provided three leaping receptions in 11-on-11 work. All three were thrown by starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick and two of the catches came against starting cornerbacks. Jenkins caught his first pass against Carlos Rogers, who returned to practice, and the next on Tarell Brown.
Later, Jenkins ran a deep crossing route over the middle of the field and used his body to fend off undrafted rookie Darryl Morris to make a leaping catch before falling to the ground.
Kaepernick immediately yelled out his approval.
"Good job, A.J."
Training Camp Notes
-Like Rogers, Jewell Hampton returned to practice. Joe Staley, Garrett Celek and Raymond Ventrone remained sidelined.
-NaVorro Bowman volunteered to field a punt during the opening special teams period. However, the All-Pro linebacker muffed his chance to impress coaches.
-Kaepernick completed his obligatory 30-yard deep ball to Vernon Davis. Michael Wilhoite had air-tight coverage, but Kaepernick's pass pierced through the air and directly into Davis' arms. Wilhoite needed eyes in the back of his head to defend the pass.
-Austin Collie and Garrett Celek both enjoyed productive days. Celek continues to benefit from McDonald's absence. The same could be said for Gray who enjoyed his best day with the 49ers.
