From the start of training camp to the end, the 49ers wide receiver position has been under the microscope.
Jon Baldwin, whom the 49ers acquired for 2012 first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins earlier Monday, should be ready for the spotlight.
To be decided the rest of this preseason: There are seemingly five or six 53-man roster spots to divide between 11 healthy players, and that's before adding in Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham, who are likely to begin the season on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List. In their ideal world, the 49ers would have both back by mid- to late-mid-season.
But is there any definition to who San Francisco's top *three *wideouts will be? Is the competition more for spots four through six?
"Wouldn't say anything is cemented, but there's been excellent play from Anquan Boldin. Kyle Williams, we feel like we know what Kyle can do and we've been a little bit cautious there (given Williams' training camp injury)," Jim Harbaugh said on Sunday. "I'm not going to go through every single guy, but there's some framework there. Marlon Moore has done an excellent job.
"Everybody is in a very competitive role after those three."
Boldin and Moore started on Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs but neither played beyond the team's first series. Williams did not suit up.
So, leaving some room for speculation, veteran free-agent additions Austin Collie, Lavelle Hawkins, Ricardo Lockette, Kassim Osgood and incumbent Chad Hall as well as rookies Quinton Patton and Chuck Jacobs are battling it out the rest of August.
We'll see who's still standing on Opening Day, Sept. 8, when the 49ers host the Green Bay Packers.
