The 49ers held a practice in shorts, two days before the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos.
Ricardo Lockette had his best day of training camp, hauling in six passes in the Tuesday night session.
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound wide receiver had the best play of the practice, too. During a move-the-ball team period, Lockette sprinted down the left sideline and caught a Scott Tolzien pass over first-team cornerback Tarell Brown.
The 25-yard reception immediately received rave reviews from Lockette's fellow wide receivers.
Anquan Boldin raised his voice to show support.
"I see you 1-8," the veteran yelled.
Lockette began the day with a pair of red zone touchdown receptions and continued to add to his practice statistics with impressive catches on intermediate routes.
Just as the 49ers wide receiver competition heat up, Lockette turned in a quality showing at practice.
Training Camp Notes
-Justin Smith returned to practice; Mike Iupati was out of action. Adam Snyder took the first-team reps at left guard in place of the Pro Bowl guard. Jonathan Goodwin wore the blue, non-contact jersey once again and worked on his conditioning during team periods by running sprints off to the side.
-Craig Dahl lined up with the first-team defense at free safety. Earlier in the day, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Dahl would start the preseason opener.
-Joe Staley watched practice, but did so with a sling over his right arm. Recent reports indicated the six-time Pro Bowler had surgery on his injured right hand.
-A.J. Jenkins dropped a touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick during a red zone period, but made up for it with a slant touchdown reception from Colt McCoy a few plays later.
-The 49ers played loud music during a few portions of practice when the first-team offense was on the field.
-Tramaine Brock broke up back-to-back passes during the loud music period. The first on a B.J. Daniels pass intended for Chuck Jacobs, the next on a Tolzien pass intended for Lockette.
-Tolzien was later intercepted on an end zone pass intended for Austin Collie. Undrafted rookie cornerback Lowell Rose turned in his first interception of training camp.
-Collie later beat Rose to catch a 50-yard touchdown pass from Daniels.
