The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that DL Cedric Thornton has been reinstated by the National Football League from the Reserve/Retired List, and subsequently has been added to the team's 90-man roster. The team also announced that DB Greg Mabin has signed his one-year exclusive rights tender.
Thornton (6-4, 290) originally signed with the 49ers on July 25, 2018 and later retired from the NFL on August 22, 2018. He entered the NFL after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent on July 26, 2011. Throughout his seven NFL seasons with the Eagles (2011-15), Dallas Cowboys (2016) and Buffalo Bills (2017), he appeared in 89 games (48 starts) and registered 278 tackles, 7.5 sacks, six passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He also appeared in three career postseason contests (one start) and added six tackles.
A 30-year-old native of Star City, AR, Thornton attended Southern Arkansas University where he registered 133 tackles, 36 tackles for loss, 10.0 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Mabin (6-2, 200) was tendered a one-year contract as an exclusive rights free agent on March 7, 2019. He appeared in 13 games (one start) last season and finished with 11 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
