B.J. Daniels had a productive afternoon at Day 2 of 49ers minicamp.
The seventh-round draft pick caught two touchdown passes as a running back in 7-on-7 red zone work and later fired a rollout touchdown pass in front of the entire team.
The athletic signal-caller continues to wear many hats in San Francisco's offseason program. Wednesday's session showcased Daniels' potential as a jack-of-all-trades for the 49ers offense.
In the first of many 7-on-7 periods, Daniels lined up in the backfield next to third-year quarterback Scott Tolzien. Daniels went out into short routes twice and caught a pair of touchdown scores by outrunning linebackers to the end zone. The 6-foot-1, 217-pound athlete has looked natural catching passes out of the backfield, something he didn't do in college at South Florida.
Daniels, however, had opportunities in practice to demonstrate his throwing talents. Despite being intercepted on a tipped pass during 7-on-7 work, Daniels showed noticeable velocity throughout a windy afternoon.
In a team red zone period, the rookie quarterback bought time by rolling to his right, but was also able to fire a low fastball to Ricardo Lockette in front of the right pylon for a touchdown.
Daniels continues to make plays on the practice field whether he's throwing the ball, carrying it or catching it out of the backfield. It's been a continued learning process for the rookie.
"I've still got a lot to learn," Daniels said earlier in the week. "I'm learning where I am and trying to improve every day."
Minicamp Notes
-Marcus Lattimore ran in straight lines on the practice fields under the watch of the team's medical staff for a second straight day. This time, however, Lattimore caught in-line passes from assistant trainer Nate Breske. Shortly after, general manager Trent Baalke lofted a few over the shoulder passes to Lattimore.
-Trenton Robinson recorded an impressive diving interception in the opening 7-on-7 period. The second-year safety dove to the ground to corral a tipped pass by linebacker Nate Stupar, who competed for a Daniels pass intended for tight end MarQueis Gray.
-Marlon Moore made several noticeable receptions on the day. First, the veteran wideout hauled in a rifled pass from Colt McCoy on a deep crossing route during 7-on-7 work. Moore also caught two deep crossing routes from Colin Kaepernick. The first came in a "move the ball" team period that resulted in a field goal for the offense. The second deep reception was in a team period from Kaepernick.
-A.J. Jenkins continued to flash his play-making talent. The second-year wideout reached out and plucked a high sideline pass from McCoy for the best offensive catch of the day. Jenkins snagged the pass in front of Craig Dahl and Nnamdi Asomugha's coverage. Jenkins also kept both feed inbounds before landing.
-During field goal work, 49ers holder Andy Lee raced out of the pocket and launched a deep ball to third-year offensive lineman Daniel Kilgore, who out-jumped two defensive linemen to catch a 20-yard touchdown pass. Kilgore celebrated the score by pretending to autograph the football.
-Asomugha and rookie outside linebacker Corey Lemonier recorded pass breakups during the "move the ball" period. Cornerback Tramaine Brock broke up a Kaepernick pass in a late team period.
-In the final red zone 7-on-7 period, McCoy completed a touchdown to Kassim Osgood in the back of the end zone. Second later, Tolzien completed a touchdown to rookie wideout Quinton Patton on a go route.
