The San Francisco 49ers announced Sunday that RB Thomas Clayton has been waived/injured. He sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Friday night's contest versus the Denver Broncos. Replacing him on the roster will be FB Bill Rentmeester. He will wear jersey number 43.
Rentmeester (6-0, 254) was originally signed as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2009 by the San Diego Chargers. He recently was released on August 5.
A 23-year-old, native of Beaver Dam, WI, Rentmeester played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin where he was named the team's special teams player of the year in 2008.
Clayton was originally a sixth-round draft pick of the 49ers in the 2007 NFL Draft. The Mt. Vernon, VA, native spent his first two seasons on the team's practice squad before being signed to the active roster for the final two games of 2008.
