The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed RB Rock Cartwright to a one-year deal.
"Rock has been a standout special teams contributor, who has also shown versatility at the running back position," said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. "He has all of the intangibles that we look for in a 49er."
Cartwright (5-8, 215) was originally a seventh round draft choice (257th overall) by the Washington Redskins in the 2002 NFL Draft. The 10-year veteran spent his first eight seasons with the Redskins (2002-09), before playing the past two with the Oakland Raiders (2010-11). In his career, Cartwright has played in 154 games (5 starts), recording 228 carries for 956 yards and 6 touchdowns. A key special teams contributor, he has returned 231 kicks for 5,450 yards (23.6 avg.) and one touchdown, in addition to logging 93 tackles on those units.
The 31-year-old native of Conroe, TX, starred collegiately at Kansas State University, where he was honorable mention All-Big 12 at fullback as a senior.
