*The San Francisco 49ers kick-off the 2015 Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week program, by announcing Keith Burns of Archbishop Mitty as our week one Coach of the Week.
*
The first year head coach couldn't have asked for much more from his team for their season opener. The Monarch's put on an impressive show at Foothill College, defeating Los Gatos 45-16. Though a non- conference game, this was a big win for the Monarchs', getting an early win in a tough non-league schedule.
The talk this preseason around Archbishop Mitty's squad was Burn's new up-tempo, spread offense which they wasted no time implementing and proved early they are not afraid to throw the ball down the field. Senior Quarterback Sam Serra launched a 39-yard bomb straight down the middle of the field to hit Junior WR Tyler Jochen on their first possession of the game. Jochen was tackled at 1 yard line, and Mitty finished the drive with a touchdown and mounting an early 7-0 lead. In the first game back for the Senior Quarterback, Serra was a force to be reckoned with both in the passing game and on the ground.
As hot as Archbishop Mitty looked on offense, defensively they were just as commanding. The defense managed 5 sacks, and came away with 2 interceptions at the end of the night. The Monarchs provided constant pressure and disruption in the Los Gatos backfield throughout the entirety of the game. were very opportunistic with big plays at key moments in the game. Head Coach Keith Burns was happy to see both sides of the ball put together a strong showing to open the 2015 season.
Los Gatos was able to get things going in the second quarter after a big safety. You could feel momentum start to swing their way, as they scored an offensive touchdown shortly after. However, it was not enough to keep up with the frantic pace set by the Monarchs and concluded with 28 points in the second half to secure the win.
Mitty will look to carry the momentum from this victory on through the rest of their nonconference schedule and into league play.
As part of this award Keith Burns, will receive a $1,000 grant for Archbishop Mitty from the 49ers Foundation. As our Coach of the Week, he will also receive two tickets to a 49ers home game where he will be recognized on the field. In the weeks leading up to the game, Coach Burns will be invited to the visit the SAP Performance Facility to watch a closed practice where Coach Tomsula will officially present him with his award. Coach Burns will also be featured on Cal-Hi Sports.
Congratulations Coach Burns and the entire Monarch's team!
