With the 36th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have selected South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Samuel (5-foot-11, 214 pounds) caught 62 passes for 882 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2018 for the Gamecocks. The 49ers know Samuel very well having coached him at the 2019 Senior Bowl back in January. He followed up an impressive week in Mobile, Ala., with a standout performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. Samuel ran a 4.48 40-yard dash in Indianapolis.
"It's a great selection with the San Francisco 49ers," Charles Davis said on NFL Network.
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein praised Samuel's toughness and said he approaches each game "like he's stepping into an alley fight."
The pick was announced by DeMarcus Cobb, son of 49ers late area scout Reggie Cobb.
"Reggie Cobb was one of the most liked guys in the personnel community," Daniel Jeremiah said.
Davis played with Cobb at the University of Tennessee and shared a heartwarming tribute about his friend. Cobb passed away suddenly last Saturday due to a heart attack.
Samuel will compete with Dante Pettis, Marquise Goodwin and Kendrick Bourne for reps lined up outside in Kyle Shanahan's offense this season.
