**About the 1981 San Francisco 49ers
**After losing two of their first three contests, the 49ers went on to win 15 of their last 16 games under the direction of third-year head coach, Bill Walsh. The team, which combined three rookie starters in the defensive secondary (S Carlton Williamson, CB Eric Wright and CB Ronnie Lott) with the likes of QB Joe Montana, WR Dwight Clark, G Randy Cross, WR Freddie Solomon, S Dwight Hicks, LB Keena Turner, DE Fred Dean and LB Jack "Hacksaw" Reynolds, formed a nucleus of world championship vintage. The season culminated with the 49ers 26-21 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI. The game featured the 49ers legendary 'goal-line stand' and a total of five takeaways by San Francisco on the day. On offense, Montana was named Super Bowl MVP after throwing for 157 yards and one touchdown, adding 18 yards on the ground and another score.
