As the regular season of High School Varsity Football concludes, this week's 49ers PREP High School Player of the Week presented by U.S. Bank is awarded to Sioeli Helu for his excellence on the field and persistent dedication as Serra High School, led by head coach Patrick Walsh, continue towards playoffs.
Sioeli Helu (#58) has been an essential player in many games throughout the 2019 season, giving opponents trouble on both sides of the ball. Helu is a 6'3", 315-pound junior for the Serra Padres, who plays both offensive and defensive line. Serra high school is now 10-1 on the season and will play Wilcox High School this Friday, November 22nd in the CIF Central Coast Section Division 1 semifinals game.
Coming into the season, it was unknown what position would best fit Sioeli's skill set. "Prior to this year we didn't know what to do with his size and speed," says Coach Walsh. "He plays strong on the line, we found where he belongs out there on the field."
Through his hard work and leadership on and off the field, Sioeli has earned the respect of his teammates and coaches. Sioeli is a multi-sport athlete who also participates in Track and Field in the spring, throwing shot put and discus.
Even though Sioeli is only a junior, his passion is helping others in the community. With both of his parents being on the police force, Sioeli volunteers with the Police Activities League, a nonprofit that benefits youth in local communities.
"I continue to be amazed at how much Sioeli develops over the years," says Coach Walsh. The future looks bright for #58!
As the school of this week's recipient of the 49ers PREP High School Player of the Week Award presented by U.S. Bank, Serra High School will receive a $500 grant towards its football program. As part of this award, Sioeli will receive two tickets to a 49ers home game where he will be recognized on the field during the pre-game ceremony. At the end of the season, Sioeli will be presented his award by 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan during a closed practice at the SAP Performance Facility.
