49ers PREP select Joe Bates as Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week

The Skyline Titans were able to defeat the Sequoia Cherokees on Friday, September 6th, to a close score of 16-12. This was a highly anticipated game which quality programs. Although the Titans focused on having control of the ball, they had trouble getting points on the board. By capitalizing on the Cherokees penalties in the fourth quarter, the Titans were able to find the end zone and finish the game with a win. 

After graduating from The University of Toledo with a degree in criminal justice, Coach Bates returned to his high school alma mater to begin his coaching career in 2015. Bates hopes to build a legacy through his career. "As a coach, I can make more of an impact in one year than some people can do their whole life" said Bates. "I want to leave my mark."

Coach Bates is a mentor at Youth Together, where they focus on ensuring students are getting the support they need in all areas of their life. Bates believes that working with youth is his life's calling and constantly looks for ways to make a difference. In his free time, Bates likes to spend time cooking and traveling the tropics with his wife and two kids he refers to as "the quadrant."

When asked what being named the Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week means to him, Coach Bates said, "this gives me an opportunity to hold my team to a higher standard of greatness going forward." The Skyline Titans are off to a promising start to the 2019 high school football season.

As our 49ers PREP Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Coach of the Week presented by U.S. Bank, Bates will receive a $1,000 grant for the Skyline football program from the 49ers Foundation. As part of this award, he will also receive two tickets to a 49ers home game where he will be recognized on the field. Bates will also be invited to visit the SAP Performance Facility to watch a closed practice where 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will officially present him with his award. Bates will be featured on the 49ers Cal-Hi Sports Report presented by U.S. Bank on Sunday's at 6 & 10 p.m. on NBC Sports California, which will continue to air throughout the week.
