On Tuesday, the league awarded a total of 35 compensatory picks to teams for the 2025 NFL Draft. The San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins tied for the most compensatory picks with each club receiving four selections this year.
That means if all things remain the same, the 49ers will have 11 selections to work with in the upcoming draft. Of the four picks San Francisco received, one is a special compensatory pick that is awarded to teams that have a minority employee hired to a head coach or primary football executive position by another team. Two years ago, the team had former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans land the head coaching job with the Houston Texans and former director of pro personnel Ran Carthon take the general manager job with the Tennessee Titans.
The other three were awarded to San Francisco because they were one of a slew of teams that lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed last offseason. These picks are all distributed between Rounds 3 and 7 based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. The formula for those free agents takes into account factors such as salary, playing time, and postseason honors.
Breakdown of 49ers Compensatory Picks:
- Round 3 - Pick 100 (special compensatory pick)
- Round 4 - Pick 138
- Round 7 - Pick 249
- Round 7 - Pick 252
