Penn State WR Allen Robinson Is a Name to Know

The 49ers hold the No. 30 overall selection in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

According to NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller of BleacherReport.com, there's an underclassman wide receiver worth monitoring in the coming weeks leading up to draft day.

"Keep an eye on Allen Robinson, a big receiver from Penn State," Miller told 49ers.com. "He came out as a junior this year but has the ideal size, 6-3, 210-plus pound and has really good quickness for yards after the catch. Just what the Niners need right now before free agency."

Robinson, a third-team All-American in 2013, caught a school-record 97 passes for 1,432 receiving yards and six touchdown catches for the Nittany Lions.

Robinson is one of a record 98 underclassmen eligible for the NFL Draft.

The big pass-catching target could be an option for the 49ers if the team loses 11-year veteran receiver Anquan Boldin in free agency.

"You have several receivers who could hit the market and not be back with the team next year, so Allen Robinson is the guy I would hitch my wagon to pre-free agency," Miller said of the receiver who became this first player since 1985 to led the Big Ten in receptions and receiving yardage in consecutive seasons.

"He's somebody to keep an eye on."

Miller also shared his thoughts on other key prospects to monitor heading into the draft. Following his week at the 2014 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., Miller spoke with us on the standouts from the week and will continue to provide pre-draft updates on 49ers.com.

Quarterbacks:

-"The top quarterback was definitely Derek Carr from Fresno State which was to be expected. Coming in as the highest ranked guy, he impressed throughout the week. He had great velocity on his passes especially with the conditions in Mobile... He did a great job of handling the elements and showing the leadership that you want from the position."

-"David Fales (San Jose State) struggled a bit early in the week. He was sick Monday and Tuesday. That definitely affected his performance on the practice field. He didn't have a ton of strength. The big knock on him is arm strength and that definitely showed up once it got windy. But he was one of the guys who progressed throughout the week. As he started to feel better, we saw a little bit more energy, a little more excitement in his step and that helped his arm. By Saturday, he was the guy who swung the pendulum."

-"Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois, a guy who many casual fans haven't heard about, he did a good job parlaying a good Shrine Game performance into a Senior Bowl invite taking A.J. McCarron's place.  He (Garappolo) was the No. 2 quarterback there for me. I thought he did a good job learning the system, learning the wide receivers and getting his chemistry and timing down. He has a strong arm, good velocity, and can move around in the pocket a little bit. Everything Garappolo does is quick and that definitely showed up on the field."

Auburn defensive end Dee Ford:

-"I think he helped himself quite a bit. Heading into the week I thought of his as someone with first-round talent but probably a second-round grade because he's a bit undersized to play defensive end. He's 6-2, right around 240 pounds. So the question is how well he can handle defeating one-on-one blocks against bigger and quicker offensive tackles."

-"I loved how they played him at defensive end throughout the week. They really let him show off his ability to disengage from blocks. I think he's solidified himself as a first-round pick, probably a mid-first-round pick. I would expect him to go similar to how (Seattle Seahawks linebacker) Bruce Irvin did as an athletic edge rusher and go into the 15-20 range once that first round actually rolls around."

Defensive tackles Will Sutton and Aaron Donald:

-"Sutton did come in bigger than expected. He looked a little softer and flabbier than I had anticipated because he was always tabbed as an undersized pass rusher. It looks like he tried to add some weight and it hasn't gone as expected. Throughout the week he did look a little heavy going through drills, he was heavy-footed a little bit, a bit slow. He was not as agile as expected, but once the game came around, he was firing off and showed good quickness. I think for him it was an even week. He probably dipped down a little bit with the practice and the weigh-in, but how well he responded and played in the game definitely helped him out."

-"Aaron Donald, I thought was one of the best players in college football this year regardless of position. He is undersized at 6-foot-1, less than 300 pounds, but his quickness was just too much for all of the offensive linemen in Mobile to handle. And he's so fast off the ball. The height actually helps him out because he has natural leverage and he makes himself a small target and it's tough for blockers to get their hands on him and redirect him in the middle of the line. I think Aaron Donald goes late first round as of right now and definitely has some momentum heading into the combine."
