The San Francisco 49ers are on the road for the first time in the 2016 season, looking to improve to 2-0 against the reigning NFC Champion Carolina Panthers.

Carolina aims to get in the win column on Sunday after dropping their opener to the Denver Broncos in a rematch of Super Bowl 50. Follow along here for updates throughout the 49ers Week 2 clash from the East Coast.

Pregame

San Francisco announced on Friday that Anthony Davis was out with a concussion.

First-round pick Joshua Garnett is active on Sunday and could be in line to make his NFL debut in Carolina. The 28th-overall pick was inactive in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Glenn Dorsey is also set to make his 2016 debut. The defensive lineman missed the end of the 2015 season and all of the preseason recovering from an ACL tear.

Cornerbacks Chris Davis and Keith Reaser, two additional players who did not play versus the Rams, are also active in Week 2.

Here is San Francisco's full list of inactives on Sunday: Davis, Christian Ponder, Marcus Cromartie, Taylor Hart, DuJuan Harris, John Theus and Tony Jerod-Eddie.

And for the Panthers: Joe Webb, Damiere Byrd, Teddy Williams, Cameron Artis-Payne, Jared Norris, Tyler Larson and Paul Soliai.

First Quarter

The 49ers kicked off to open the game. San Francisco's defense stuffed Jonathan Stewart on the first play of the game and then intercepted Cam Newton on the following play. The quarterback's first pass attempt of the game was tipped by NaVorro Bowman in the middle of the field and Antoine Bethea came down with the pick.

Pierre Garçon carried the ball four straight times for 18 yards to get the ball to Carolina's 5-yard line. Kawann Short dropped Shaun Draughn for a 5-yard loss on 2nd-and-goal and Blaine Gabbert was forced to throw the ball away on 3rd-and-goal.

Phil Dawson drilled a 29-yard field goal to give the 49ers an early 3-0 lead. (11:21)

Newton responded by orchestrating a drive of his own. Stewart's 9-yard run led to three straight completions by Newton. An encroachment penalty on the 49ers and a 7-yard run by Fozzy Whittaker got the Panthers into 49ers territory. Newton then unleashed a deep ball to Ted Ginn Jr. for a 42-yard touchdown, but Ginn's second foot came down out of bounds and the call was overturned.

San Francisco was flagged for illegal contact on the play, however, which gave the Panthers a first down. An offensive pass interference moved the Panthers back 10 yards. Tramaine Brock then stopped Steward for a 3-yard loss. Newton was forced out of bounds for a short gain on second down. On 3rd-and-22, Newton missed an open Greg Olson down the sideline to bring up fourth down. The 49ers brought pressure on the play and flushed Newton out of the pocket. Kerley fair caught the ensuing punt at San Francisco's 12-yard line.

Carolina would score two plays later.

Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson recovered a Hyde fumble and returned it nine yards for a touchdown to give Carolina a 7-3 lead. (4:04)

The fumble was Hyde's first of the season and marked the first points allowed by the 49ers this season.

Gabbert passes of 12 yards to Jeremy Kerley, 20 yard to Torrey Smith and nine yards to Quinton Patton got the 49ers moving, but the drive stalled at the Panthers 44-yard line. San Francisco's quarterback missed an open Garrett Celek downfield on the possession. Bradley Pinion punted it back to Carolina.

Second Quarter

San Francisco's defense got a turnover of its own. Bethea and Chris Davis combined to force a fumble on a Whittaker carry and Ray-Ray Armstrong recovered for the 49ers.

Rod Streater grabbed his first reception as a member of the 49ers, a 12-yard gain to convert on 3rd-and-11. Draughn followed with a 19-yard run.

Two plays later, Gabbert connected with Smith deep down the middle of the field for a 28-yard touchdown to put the 49ers back on top, 10-7. (10:02)

The score was Smith's first of the season as San Francisco's top wideout took advantage of 1-on-1 coverage, beating his man on a post route.

Carolina wasted no time retaking the lead.

On the first play of the Panthers following drive, Newton completed a 78-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Greg Olsen down the middle of the field to put Carolina up 14-10 (9:40).

It marked the first points allowed by San Francisco's defense this season.

San Francisco couldn't answer the Panthers score, going 3-and-out on their next possession.

Near the end of the first half, Carolina used all three timeouts and got the ball back with 0:42 remaining at their own 46-yard line. Newton completed a 17-yard pass to Kelvin Benjamin to get the Panthers moving. The quarterback kept the ball on the next play for a 16-yard gain.

Reaser nearly intercepted Newton on a pass into the end zone but the corner couldn't secure the catch while falling to the ground.

Graham Gano drilled a 39-yard field goal to extend Carolina's lead to 17-10 going into halftime. (0:00).

San Francisco arguably out-played the Panthers through two quarters, but Carolina's defensive touchdown and long score to Olsen are currently the difference on the scoreboard.

Third Quarter

The 49ers got the ball first to open the second half and went three-and-out.

Two penalties on San Francisco's defense assisted Carolina's methodical drive down the field. An incredible, juggling catch by Benjamin on 3rd-and-7 gained 25 yards and set up 1st-and-10 from the 49ers 11-yard line.

Two plays later, Newton fired a strike to Benjamin for a 10-yard touchdown to put Carolina up 24-10. (8:38)

Another three-and-out gave the ball immediately back to the Panthers.

Newton dropped another dime to Ginn for a 52-yard completion down the right sideline.

A 9-yard touchdown pass from Newton to Benjamin put the Panthers up 30-10. (4:56)

The 49ers got a pair of first downs on their next possession but that's all the offense could muster, punting it back to the Panthers.

Fourth Quarter

Gerald Hodges sacked Newton and forced a fumble. Eli Harold recovered the loose ball and returned it 18 yards to the Panthers 17-yard line.

A 2-yard run by Hyde, incompletion and sack were the 49ers next three plays offensively.

Phil Dawson's 39-yard field goal was good to make it 31-13 Panthers. (12:38)

San Francisco got a huge break on the ensuing kickoff. Shaun Draughn recovered a muffed return from Ginn to give the 49ers the ball at Carolina's 1-yard line.

On the next play, Gabbert kept the ball on a zone-read and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to pull the 49ers closer, 31-20. (12:31)

Ginn made amends for the previous turnover, returning the ensuing kickoff 59 yards to the 49ers 38-yard line. The 49ers defense bent, but didn't break, holding Carolina out of the end zone keeping their hopes alive. Ahmad Brooks saved the game, batting down a pass that would have surely gone for a touchdown as Newton had Corey Brown wide open.

Gano's 31-yard field goal made it a two touchdown game, 34-20, Panthers. (8:07)

Two plays later, San Francisco made it a one score game.

Gabbert found Garrett Celek deep down the middle of the field and McDonald ran away from the Panthers defense for a 75-yard touchdown, pulling the 49ers within seven points, 34-27. (7:51)

On the touchdown, Patton delivered a key block on Luke Kuechly to help spring McDonald.

Newton wouldn't be denied on the next possession. The reigning MVP completed a crucial third-and-10 situation with a 25-yard pass to Benjamin. Carolina's drive stalled, but the Panthers still put up points.

A 49-yard field goal by Gano made it a two score game, 37-27. (4:08)

Kuechly got his revenge and intercepted a Gabbert pass intended for Kerley. The linebacker read Gabbert's eyes and jumped the route to get the pick.

Four plays later, Newton found Devin Funchess for a 17-yard touchdown to extend Carolina's lead to 43-27 following a missed PAT (3:31).

Newton now has 353 passing yards and four touchdowns on the day.

James Bradberry intercepted Gabbert on the 49ers next possession to ice the game.

Gano added his fourth field goal of the game, this time from 41-yards out to make it 46-27. (1:06)

The Panthers went on to win by that score as the 49ers fell to 1-1 on the season. San Francisco will travel to Seattle in Week 3 for a divisional matchup against the Seahawks.
