Carlos Hyde to Miss 49ers Final Game of 2016

The San Francisco 49ers will be without the team's leading rusher this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Chip Kelly confirmed the news on Monday.

Pierre Garçon sustained a medial-collateral ligament (MCL) sprain in his left knee during a Week 16 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Hyde underwent an MRI examination on Christmas Day. The injury won't require surgery, according to the 49ers coach.

"The fact that it's a non-surgical thing is the one thing that's positive," Kelly said. "It's unfortunate that we won't have him for Seattle, but it's good news for Carlos."

The timing of Hyde's injury was rather unfortunate considering he was 12 yards shy of reaching 1,000 rushing yards for the first time of his three-year career. Hyde would have been the 11th player in 49ers history to accomplish the feat.

Instead, Hyde finishes 2016 with 988 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 217 carries (4.6 average yards per rush). Hyde added 27 catches for 163 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Hyde leads the 49ers with nine total touchdowns.

"I think he's done a really nice job of catching the ball out of the backfield," Kelly said of Hyde, who caught three touchdowns in San Francisco's last five outings. "He scored the first touchdown for us on Saturday. He did a nice job on his route, a good job after the catch."

The 49ers will turn to Shaun Draughn, DuJuan Harris and Mike Davis to finish the season as San Francisco's running backs for the upcoming divisional home game against Seattle.

Per Kelly, Hyde's MCL sprain will sideline him for a few weeks. Hyde will be ready for the start of the team's strength and conditioning program in 2017.

Kelly added that Joe Staley's hamstring injury will continue to be evaluated. The veteran lineman's status for this Sunday remains unknown. Second-year tackle Trent Brown "did a nice job" in his first start on the left side, according to Kelly.
