Joint practices are back in 2016.
Chip Kelly told reporters on Tuesday that the San Francisco 49ers will have sessions with the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos during training camp. San Francisco will host Houston for one practice prior to the preseason opener on Aug. 14. The 49ers will then be in Denver for two practices with the Broncos ahead of the preseason contest on Aug. 20.
San Francisco is no stranger to joint practices. Just last year, the team went on the same extended trip to Denver in order to hold two sessions from the Broncos UCHealth Training Center.
Kelly is also fond of such practices. In fact, the 49ers head coach prefers them. During his three-year tenure in Philadelphia, the Eagles held joint sessions with the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
"I just think it's a chance to see other guys, a chance to see different schemes. I've always been a big fan of it," Kelly said. "As long as the coaches kind of agree to the format in terms of what's going on, I think you can get a lot of positives out of it, and I know (Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien) Billy and (Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak) Kubes really well. We're excited about the opportunities to go do that."
Official dates and times of the three practices will be announced in August.
