The San Francisco 49ers have signed wide receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins to one-year contracts. In order to make room for Collie and Hawkins on the roster, the team waived C Sherman Carter and P Colton Schmidt.
Collie (6-0, 204) was selected in the fourth round (127th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. In four seasons with the Colts, he played in 42 regular season games (16 starts), recording 173 receptions for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also contributed 17 receptions for 241 yards and two touchdowns in three postseason games.
A 27–year-old native of El Dorado Hills, CA, Collie played collegiately at Brigham Young University, where he logged 215 catches for 3,255 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Hawkins (5-11, 195) was selected in the fourth round (126th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He spent five seasons with the Titans, appearing in 52 games (four starts), registering 71 receptions for 771 yards and one touchdown. He also added 14 kickoff returns for 335 yards. Hawkins was released by the Titans on May 1, 2013, and later signed with the New England Patriots on May 9. He was released by the Patriots on July 31.
The 27-year-old native of Stockton, CA, Hawkins played at the University of California, where he registered 136 career receptions for 1,748 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also tallied 49 kickoff returns for 1,051 yards and one touchdown.
Carter (6-3, 304) originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 7.
Schmidt (5-11, 225) was signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on July 15.
