The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday they have exercised the fifth-year option on safety Eric Reid for the 2017 season.
The 49ers originally selected Reid (6-1, 213) in the first round (18th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. Reid has started in 47 games throughout his three-year career, tallying 238 tackles, seven interceptions, 25 passes defensed, 1.0 sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. A 2013 Pro Bowl selection, he was the first rookie safety in franchise history to be named to the Pro Bowl.
A 24-year-old native of Geismar, LA., Reid played collegiately at LSU, where he appeared in 39 games (29 starts) for the Tigers and amassed 199 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 11 passes defensed. A two-time All-SEC Honor Roll selection, he became just the second LSU safety in school history to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
