The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that they have claimed defensive back Dexter McCoil off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers. In order to make room on the roster, the team has waived defensive back Lorenzo Jerome.
McCoil (6-4, 220) originally signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent on January 12, 2016, from the University of Tulsa. He appeared in two games this season where he made one tackle on special teams. As a rookie in 2016, he appeared in 16 games (two starts) and registered 24 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception in addition to three tackles on special teams.
McCoil joined the Chargers after spending the 2014 season with the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League (AFL) and the 2015 season with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). A 26-year-old native of Lutcher, LA, McCoil spent four years (2009-12) at Tulsa where he appeared in 51 games (44 starts) and registered 316 tackles, 25 passes defensed and 18 interceptions, and earned All-Conference USA honors in three consecutive seasons (First-Team – 2012, Second-Team – 2011 & Honorable Mention – 2010).
Jerome (5-10, 204) originally signed with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 4, 2017, out of Saint Francis (PA) University. This season, he appeared in four games and registered three tackles.
